What it says
  1. Why does the fibre you can't digest still feed you?
  2. Because you're not the one eating it. A whole city of microbes in your gut is.
  3. They ferment the fibre into short fatty acids, and the cells lining your colon live on those.
  4. Starve the tenants and the walls thin. Feed them, and they pay rent.
  5. Oats, beans, onions, apples: rent.
  6. What did you feed your tenants today?

04). A cutaway: a kitchen above, and under the floor a tiny apartment block of glowing tenants (the microbes), fed by a grocery chute. Fibre drops down the chute; the tenants eat and pay rent: little coins (short-chain fatty acids) rise into the wall above, and the wall thickens and glows. Starve them and the windows go dark and the wall thins. Oats, beans, onions, apples drop the chute: rent.
