What it says
- Why does the thunder reach you after the flash?
- Because light and sound leave the strike together, but light runs and sound walks.
- Light crosses the sky in no time. Sound takes about three seconds for every kilometre.
- Count the seconds between the flash and the boom, divide by three, and that's how far it is.
- When the gap shrinks, the storm is coming to you.
- Do you count?
05). A farm porch in a night storm. Lightning strikes a far tree: a runner (light) and a walker (sound) leave the strike together and cross the field toward the porch; the runner is there at once, the walker takes seconds. A counter on the porch counts the gap; divide by three; the storm creeps closer as the gap shrinks.
