A long document is a long roll of cloth; the tailor (the machine) takes the ends, the middle and whatever caught its eye, and stitches a coat that hangs well, with a whole panel still on the floor. The fix, by the middle: chalk on the cutting table, "quote a line from each section, then summarise", the panels numbered, and the missing one turns up. The why: a summary hides what is missing; a quote cannot.
