What it says
- Which African city built more wall than the Great Wall of China?
- Benin City, in today's Nigeria. Its walls and moats ran sixteen thousand kilometres, dug by hand, without a single machine.
- In 1691 a Portuguese captain wrote: bigger than Lisbon, streets straight as far as the eye can see, no theft, no doors.
- In 1897 the British burned it, and shipped thousands of its bronzes to London.
- They're still there. What else did they skip in school?
02). Five sets: an aerial over the earthworks (red ramparts and dark moats winding through green), the diggers at a rampart, Benin City at dusk in 1691 with its straight avenue and palm-oil lamps, the same avenue burning in 1897 with soldiers carrying a crate, and a bronze head in a museum vitrine in London.
