Edward Mukuka Nkoloso, a schoolteacher and freedom fighter, ran his own space programme from a farm 11 km outside Lusaka: his Afronauts were rolled down a hill in a 200-litre oil drum and swung from a tyre; his rocket, D-Kalu 1, a drum of aluminium and copper; its crew a girl of seventeen (Matha Mwambwa), two cats and a missionary; he asked UNESCO for seven million pounds, and UNESCO said no.
